ANYTHING BUT CHARDONNAY or ABC is becoming a way of life for more and more wine drinkers. While I applaud the search for new, interesting, and unique wines, I am concerned with the increasing rejection of one of the wine world’s most noble varietals. TheABC movement is really the fault of the Chardonnay Manufacturing Industry. (Notice how I didn’t say winemakers.) Most mass-market Chardonnays have almost no connection to traditional winemaking. They are over cropped in the vineyards, over oak-chipped in the cellars, and under-priced in the stores. Like a plague of yellow-tailed locusts they devour shelf space and force artisan Chardonnays into the closeout bin.
So I can understand why drinkers adopted an ABC attitude. The problem comes however for producers who truly make good Chardonnay. For when handled properly, Chardonnay is the most complex, engaging, and food friendly of all white wines. What happens to these wines in an ABC world?
