X004 - Four Most Asked Wine Questions. (click to play, right-click to save)
Transcript:
Today, we are going to get quick answers to the most common questions that I receive in my job as Wine Manager at Walt Churchill’s Market.
A: Almost certainly not – the allergic reaction to sulfites is a closing of the throat and you have to go to the hospital. Headaches are most likely caused by histamines or being too dehydrated for the amount of alcohol you are consuming. If you consistently get headaches from wine, talk to your doctor – not your wine guy.
Q: Don’t the French and Italians keep their best wines in country and send their junk to us?
A: I don’t know where this piece of slander comes from, but it isn’t true at all. Often we in America are receiving a better blend of French wines then the French themselves consume. You see, they aren’t ‘sending’ anything to us. There are lots of Americans on the ground in France and Italy finding excellent small producers for sale in American stores. Staking their reputation on the quality.
Q: What does table wine mean?
A: It is used interchangeably with the words still wine to mean any wine that isn’t sparkling or a dessert wine. In France, the phrase Vin du Table or table wine means the lowest level of quality as certified by the French government.
Q: How long will this bottle last after I open it?
A: In almost every instance, you will lose a considerable amount of quality in the first 12 to 24 hours with the wine completely dead in about three days. If the wine tastes better on day two, it was almost certainly a wine that should have aged in your cellar a number of years.
